Q. What did you think about the new budget? Thoughts on the £20 uplift extension, or what was missing?
It is good news that they are extending the extra payment, but when it ends this is going to cause real hardships for people when it comes to an end as it will put them back into hardship with an effective cut in what money they have to survive on. Overall I think there needs to be a complete overhaul of the benefits system to ensure that those who are genuinely unable to work are given enough money to support their families to be able to buy fresh healthy food and warm clothing without a continual struggle. I receive contribution based ESA and child benefit but have not received any extra help from the government since the start of the pandemic. I receive no financial help from my ex partner in order to support my daughter and have to rely on a food bank in order to be able to feed ourselves. Even with this help I was finding it a real struggle to buy warm clothes and money for heating, after a lot of research I was able to find some help with utility bills but every decision on what to buy has to be taken with care as it is still a struggle to survive and as some of the help comes to an end things will only get more difficult. There are very real hardships that many people suffer due to a lack of income that is unavoidable and will in the long term cause inequalities for children living in this situation through no fault of there own.
