My first Covid reality this week is that my 16 year old son who is also my young carer has been denied Carer's Allowance as he is the equivalent of full time education as I home educate him. Yet he and I are together 24/7 365 days of the year now and I rely on him a lot. He is very disappointed with the decision, not so much because of the loss of money, but the lack of recognition for all the young carers out there, including him. Current estimates suggest 700 000 young people are young carers and it has a massive impact on their psychological health.
