Q. Do you get free school meals and what difference do they make?
My daughter is now 21 and at University but when she was at school, she got free school meals. They were a lifeline and we really struggled in the school holidays without them. Children are always hungry, sadly benefit payments don't reflect this. I remember often going without food so my daughter could eat. People look at benefits and think I could manage on that but if you are on them long-term with pathetic increases of 90p a year etc., you struggle. Kids need new clothes, shoes. Household appliances wear out and then because you are living on the basic minimum, you have to either borrow and get into a circle of debt or you can't eat properly or can't afford to heat your home.
